In her years of working in hospitals, Kerry had seen many parents lose children. It wasn't until her own son, Toby, was stillborn that she understood just how isolating the experience could be. Knowing the immense comfort that comes from having such a loss acknowledged, Kerry founded Precious Wings. The Brisbane-based charity relies on volunteers – including bereaved parents – who create and deliver Memory Boxes to hospitals and funeral homes across Queensland. The boxes, which contain items such as locks of the child's hair and footprints, also help hospital staff to initiate conversations at a time when it can be hard to find the right words. The charity also works with palliative care teams to enable families of terminally ill children and adults to capture precious memories. This grant will help Precious Wings to provide love, hope, understanding and support to many more families.
